ProjectWIRI EMU Maintenance and Stabling Facility
Auckland Transport procured electric trains to meet the latest developments in railway technology and provide a reliable, comfortable and energy efficient mode of transport across the Auckland Railway Network. A purpose-built depot was required to house Electrical Multiple Units (EMU) and to provide maintenance facilities. The Wiri maintenance and stabling facility is where all maintenance of Auckland’s electric trains is carried out.
TSA Riley was engaged as Project Managers throughout the design and construction of this state-of-the-art facility, with a key focus on safety and efficiency. We worked as engineer’s representative to the contract, managing all aspects of the contract including liaising with contractors on progress reports, monthly invoicing, variation claims, and contract instructions. The importance of keeping the depot to program was magnified by the interconnection with other projects progressing simultaneously as part the wider electrification plan. Construction was carried out in close proximity to electrification and components such as the installation of electric wires was a major challenge.
The project was delivered with zero harm construction incidents and in time for the arrival of the first EMUs. The completed purpose-built facility comprises a maintenance building, rail track sidings, stabling area for 28 trains, a train wash and offices to house maintenance staff and train operators.
