TSA Riley have been engaged on multiple GNS projects at their Wellington locations – Avalon and the National Isotope Centre (NIC). These include refurbishments of laboratory spaces; Water Dating, Green Hydrogen and Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory (under construction) and multiple small works, building maintenance & compliance projects.

The laboratory projects provide complexities with health and safety, and the nature of works/experiments being completed within the spaces. The Avalon site is home to the world’s most accurate tritium dating facility – the Water Dating Laboratory, where TSA Riley worked with GNS to complete the required detailed planning to ensure minimal disruption to laboratory operations, with contracts to fulfil throughout the year resulting in a narrow November-February window to complete the refurbishment. The works included demolition of internal fitout, and redevelopment of floorplate to maximise efficiency, and was completed in two-stages to allow ongoing operations in the laboratory, with minimal overall shutdown time. TSA Riley was engaged to facilitate the design development, contractor procurement and undertake the Engineer to the Contract and contract administration roles.

The Green Hydrogen programme is researching ways to create, transport and store this valuable energy source in more sustainable ways. Located at the NIC facility, this project saw the redevelopment of a miscellaneous area into a world leading laboratory with one of GNS’ largest fume cupboards installed to date. TSA Riley were engaged to facilitate the design development, contractor procurement and undertake the Engineer to the Contract and contract administration roles.

A project in construction, the Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory, located at the NIC facility, is the oldest continuously operating radiocarbon facility in the world. The laboratory provides measurement, research design and data interpretation services across the Earth sciences spectrum, allowing governments, industries and communities understand and address climate change and needs to move towards a carbon-zero future. The project involves a complete refurbishment of the existing space, with TSA Riley engaged to facilitate the design development, contractor procurement and undertake the Engineer to the Contract and contract administration roles.
