InsightModern Methods of Construction – The Future of Education
In April 2021 TSA held a roundtable discussion into the future of building schools. You can view the webinar in the video above.
Modern Methods of Construction goes beyond modular or kit of parts design and encompasses any construction methods beyond the conventional. MMC uptake is global with Australia well on the way to see an impact on construction norms within the education sector. Educational providers and partners such as SINSW, CEDP, Bryden Wood and TSA are working together to deliver well-designed educational spaces responding to pedagogical approaches with a greater reach through MMC.
TSA were proud to host our panel discussion on the Future of Building Schools (April 2021), gaining insights into the application of Modern Methods of Construction. This paper sets out a selection of discussion points.

What is MMC?
Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) is used as an umbrella term and includes the following:
· Volumetric modular construction
· Kit-of-parts
· Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA)
· Off-site manufacturing
· On-site manufacturing
DfMA often gets used in place of MMC but at its core DfMA is really an approach to design and an enabler for MMC. Put simply MMC can be any method of construction that is not conventional.
