2023: A year of impact

From the sparkling waters of South Australia’s Spencer Gulf, across the baked expanse of the Outback, to the Garden City of Christchurch, our people spent 2023 working together with clients to pioneer solutions and transform communities.

Together, we protected our planet.

Beneath the teeming waters of the Great Barrier Reef lies a 40-hectare ship grounding scar – one of the largest reef-related impacts in the world. Since 2021, TSA’s people have provided procurement advisory services to help the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority remediate and restore this irreplaceable part of our natural world.

When it comes to Environmental Social Governance (ESG), we know that each link in the chain counts. Our Kuala Lumpur team worked side-by-side with one of Malaysia’s largest infrastructure companies to support their ESG goals. Coordinating sessions with over 1000 of Gamuda’s supply chain contractors, TSA emphasised the importance of monitoring ESG performance and compliance with Gamuda’s ‘Green Plan 2025’.

Imagine a project strategy capable of reducing costs while significantly improving sustainability outcomes. This scenario is now a reality for a Christchurch property investor since enlisting the carbon advisory services of TSA and The Footprint Company. Advising on the revitalisation of the NZR Co. Building, our team helped implement a low-carbon, adaptive re-use design that preserves the existing structure, substantially lowers project costs, and reduces the project’s carbon footprint by 4,800 tonnes.

Together, we built schools for better learning.

On the southwestern coast of Victoria in the seaside city of Warrnambool, South West TAFE students and local community recently welcomed the new Warrnambool Learning and Library Hub. Winning numerous architectural awards, the project provides local and modern learning facilities – but its community impact started long before classes began. TSA and Nicholson Construction worked with Apprenticeships Victoria to employ 50 apprentices throughout the project lifecycle – including 15 directly from South West TAFE.

Further north, our team is using cutting-edge technology to carry out building fabric risk reduction works across the University of Sydney’s sprawling campus. Scaffolding and carabiners have given way to drone photogrammetry and 3D digital modelling, significantly reducing project costs and dramatically increasing the speed and accuracy of assessing and maintaining close to 200 historic university assets.

Together, we accelerated health innovation.

In June we released the Digital Twin Whitepaper after presenting it at 2 international conferences. It looked at how we delivered a first-of-its-kind project, using a digital twin to test models of care for the redevelopment of one of Australia’s most essential emergency departments.

TSA’s SMART Prize brought together leading architects, consultants, clients and advocates to create the Care is Care study team. On a global journey, the group visited 26 leading virtual health programs across 6 countries. The team’s findings, published in the ‘Care is Care’ whitepaper, offer transformative solutions to help solve the healthcare capacity crisis.

Since 2017, TSA has spent 6 years planning, developing and delivering the 72,000m2 Tweed Valley Hospital Redevelopment. Now, our team are eagerly counting down to the hospital’s official May 2024 opening, when their resilience, passion and expertise will evolve into comprehensive regional healthcare on the doorstep of the Tweed-Byron community.

Together, we got people home faster.

In South Australia, 8,800 vehicles travel the Port Wakefield Highway daily, surging to 16,000 at peak times. Helping to deliver key Port Wakefield to Port Augusta Alliance projects, including bridges, intersections, lanes and bike paths, TSA’s people are getting South Australians to where they need to be faster and safer every day.

In the aftermath of ex-tropical cyclone Ellie, TSA stepped up to help Main Roads Western Australia repair and rebuild the vital infrastructure connecting the vast Kimberley region. With road infrastructure damages exceeding AUS$400 million, our team is meticulously documenting repairs and submitting claims to the Federal Government’s disaster relief fund to help reconnect some of Australia’s remotest communities.

People are travelling smoother and faster thanks to Darwin International Airport’s new automated baggage drop facility. Working closely with the Airport Development Group, TSA’s integrated project team managed multiple contractors within an operational environment to seamlessly integrate new software and hardware technology into an existing system.

Together, we diverted construction waste from landfill.

Twelve years after the Christchurch Earthquake, we helped the students of Marian College find a surprising new home. Nestled in the suburb of Papanui, a disused warehouse has a new purpose. Saving a huge amount of concrete and steel from landfill, the building is now a unique learning space for the school’s students to learn and grow.

Four thousand eight hundred and eighty kilometres from Christchurch, in the island nation of Kiribati, TSA’s people are helping build a new Australian High Commission. They’re also building better futures, upskilling locals and using repurposed materials from demolished buildings to develop and improve Kiribati dwellings.

Thank you.

To our awesome clients – thank you for choosing TSA to help you move, teach, repair, build, heal, sustain, and innovate in 2023. To our new colleagues and clients in the UK, we look forward to working together in 2024.

To our spectacular people – thank you for making 2023 a year of impact. Each day, no matter the scale or challenge, you drive transformative projects that make a difference to our business and world.

As the year comes to a close, we wish you all a safe and rejuvenating holiday break spent together with family and friends.
