2021 New Zealand Building Industry Awards

Collaboration – the key to successful outcomes.

New Zealand Institute of Building’s annual New Zealand Building Industry Awards acknowledges and celebrates the high performing individuals and teams behind New Zealand’s most successful building projects. Last Friday saw the NZ Building Industry Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner, where TSA amongst others were proud recipients of awards.

The Project Team working on Auckland’s Ferry Basin Redevelopment – Canopy Project were the category winner for the Hays Construction NZ Interdisciplinary Collaboration Award. The team included NZ Force Construction (Jordan Gregory); Downtown JV (Sam Walton); TSA (Angus Newsam); Isthmus Group (Paulo Costa); and Structure Design (Ashley Smith). Congratulations to the whole team involved in this exciting project.

The Ferry Basin Redevelopment is a major feature of Auckland’s Downtown Infrastructure Development Programme (DIDP), where TSA provided project management and acted as Engineer’s Representative. The redevelopment has provided infrastructure in the form of six new ferry berths and three sheltered gangways with architectural canopies (weighing 105 tonnes each) on the West Side of Queens Wharf. This will increase the ferry operations’ flexibility and resilience, which in turn will meet the city’s growing transport needs.

Working under the DIDP collaborative One Team model, the canopy project team devised a plan to construct the canopies offsite in modularised units. Once constructed, the prefabricated units were shipped by barge from Hobsonville Point to the site, then lifted into place using a separate barge with a 250-tonne crawler crane.  The result of this reduced the installation programme for each canopy from three months to five weeks onsite – providing a significant programme and cost saving for the overall project.

The judges said that “the extent of collaboration spanned all those involved. The team’s planning, logistics and accuracy were particularly impressive on a technically demanding and complex project with short timeframes.”

Our second success for the evening was for Shane Phillips who received a highly commended for the THERMOSASH Consultants Award category for his role on the Foodstuffs North Island (FSNI) Head Office & Ambient Distribution Centre.

This large and technically complex project, directed by Shane, involved FSNI entering into a Development Agreement (DA) with Auckland International Airport Limited to provide a new 65,000m2 Distribution Centre and 8,500m2 Head Office. The DA incorporated key milestones, including contract requirements, design, Green Star obligations, and hard end dates. Challenges included FSNI adding 10,000m2 to the distribution centre mid-construction.

The office building achieved a 5-star Green Star design rating and is targeting a 6-star built rating (submission pending). It is also net-zero energy as the power consumption requirements are offset by the power generated from the photovoltaic installation on the Distribution Centre’s roof, the largest in the country at the time of install.

The Judges said that “Shane Phillips is a superstar. This complex $200 million development involved three separate building projects, and he delivered a world-class purpose-built facility”.
