Netball Centre at Ngā Puna Wai

The Netsal Centre is a brand new, 10,000sqm indoor sports facility. It’s bringing netball into the future by providing a new home for the Christchurch Netball Centre – whose home for over 100 years was a 36-court outdoor court in Hagley Park.

As a Design and Build project, Netsal is a purpose-built indoor netball facility at Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub in Christchurch with 10 international standard courts. As well as netball, the Centre hosts rhythmic gymnastics, volleyball, and futsal. The project is significant to Christchurch as the new facility secures the future of Netball in the region for current players and generations of athletes to come, with a focus on women’s sports.

A generous benefactor who donated $10 million to the project was key to getting this project underway. Their vision was to provide a high-quality community facility to support the future of women’s sports in Canterbury.

The new centre features high quality wooden sprung flooring, wall mounted scoreboards, netting, ventilation, and a solid frame for several sporting codes to base themselves. Additionally, there is a mezzanine for viewing games, umpire space; four changing rooms; large storeroom, café area with seating and a view to the courts; two multi-use rooms; medical room; event control room; reception; office area; and extensive off-street parking.

Separate to the Netsal Centre, during the early design stage of the project, and to help deliver the required work on schedule, Christchurch City Council engaged TSA to directly to project manage the external Ngā Puna Wai Civil and Landscaping Works. This area contains 443 carparks including 10 accessible and two EV parks; over 25,000 native plantings; bespoke pedestrian footbridges; and irrigation, drainage, and rain gardens to service the area. Overseeing and managing these works as well as Netsal Centre, enabled efficient coordination and collaboration between the different parties, leading to a successful synergy of design and ensured the project stayed on track.

Appollo Projects were the construction partner, with TSA Riley providing full project management services from feasibility to project completion. Our involvement included a full tender review and recommendation, involvement in all design phases and a steady presence during construction.
